The Story, the Team and Partners

The Story

The DEXAWAVE project's goal is cheap, reliable and available wave energy, so that wave energy can have a significant impact on the common electricity supply in the future.

DEXAWAVE ApS was established in August 2008 as a SME with the following shareholders: DEXA Holding ApS (41 %) ·  Innovation MidtVest A/S (22 %) ·  Elbaek ApS (24 %) - Novatech Holding ApS (10 %) - Staff (3 %)
The key to achieving a significantly lower kWh production price is the simplicity of the DEXAWAVE converter. Although the company was only founded recently, the principles behind the converter unit have been under development since 2005. The company is run as a light asset organisation, with core competences internally in project management, control units, electronics and software applications. The company also has extensive experience in sales, administration, finance and general management. Due to the light asset strategy, a strong and competent network is being built in areas where resources are not available internally, such as design, testing, numerical simulations, mechanical construction, hydraulics and offshore.

The first scale models have already been built and launched. So far the company has met all milestones on schedule. Costs have been kept within budget and objectives have been reached.

Lars Clausen, Director of Concept and Innovation, Dexawave
Inventor and Entrepreneur

2006   Lars Clausen initiated the DEXA Wave Energy project by building scale models, including models with a power take-off generator, strain gauge sensors and data acquisition. He developed a computer model for analyzing and predicting the performance, cost and viability of proprietary wave energy converter design. He is the author of a common wave power system analysis and comparison tool for the Danish Wave Energy Society. Lars is also the website manager for the Danish Wave Energy Society (www.waveenergy.dk), closely monitoring information from the worldwide wave energy industry, as well as official meetings and events relating to wave energy. He is responsible for patent mapping (in progress) of worldwide patents in the wave energy field.

2005   Lars founded DEXA Technologies Ltd, for the development and production of electronic products, microcontroller hardware and software, Internet connected software, power electronics, control systems, mixed signal data communication and other electronic devices. This included development for third party companies in Denmark and Wales (Swansea) on a consultancy basis.

1994   Lars founded LC Audio Technology, for the development and manufacture of Audio equipment, RF receivers, acoustics, industrial robotic control units, data acquisition for power measurement, ultra-precision timing devices and other electronic equipment. (Sold off in 2002, but under Lars' management until the summer of 2005).

1990   Lars was a development engineer at the Bang & Olufsen Corporate Research Centre and medical devices branch, specializing in Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) and RF data communications, software for data communication and analysis, mixed signal and power electronic hardware development.

1989   Lars worked for the wave energy project in collaboration with the then Danish Technology Centre for Renewable Energy. After 6 months without funding, he received a dream offer from Bang and Olufsen to work in their corporate research centre. He left the wave project, but continued to follow progress in the wave industry and studied wave energy technology.

1985   Lars was a development engineer at LEGO Systems, a Danish toy manufacturing company, specializing in designing mass-produced electronic hardware for toys and educational devices, for example, robotic controllers, PC interface cards and PC software drivers.

1983   Lars was a development engineer at HEMI Control Systems, a subcontractor for the NordTank Wind turbine producer. He specialized in development, installation and field servicing of Wind Turbine power control systems in the USA.

1982   Lars was a development engineer at Grene, an agriculture wholesale company. He designed sensors and monitoring equipment for hydraulic farming equipment.

1982   Lars graduated as an Electronics Service Technician, specializing in RF and signal handling.

Business Partners

Global Wind Power A/S

Global Wind Power is a Danish-based leading international project developer company specialising in developing, implementing, selling and managing wind turbine projects for professional investment. The wind turbine projects are sold to a range of international customers: industrial, institutional and private.

Global Wind Power is a dynamic company which has experienced rapid growth since its foundation in

1999. We closely monitor the opportunities on the global market, and advance in line with the needs of customers. Today, we have more than 400 MW of international experience.

For the implementation of this project, Global Wind Power will make its know-how and expertise in project development within the field of renewable energy available to DEXAWAVE. Global Wind Power will provide the necessary agreements, rights and permits needed for the implementation and subsequent operation of the prototype. Global Wind Power will also assist in preparing a business case for the purpose of financial evaluations.

Novatech ApS

Novatech is a Danish sales and engineering company established in 1996 in Aalborg, having its own production facilities in Poland. The company is specialized in the fields of large steel structures and equipment for the shipping industry, special transport equipment, road trailers, and agriculture trailers.

The company has more than 20 years of experience with the production of large steel structures.

Working primarily as steel design and manufacturing company, Novatech works on various projects but concentrate its activities in the marine sector.

Novatech is involved in the creation of new designs and manages its own development – all the way from initial brainstorming sessions to the final product roll out – either alone or in collaboration with its clients. Most Novatech products have been approved by the appropriate classification society and the company’s staff are certified and well trained.

To develop the highly technical designs, drawings and calculations, the company’s designers work in a sophisticated 3D environment aiming to create the best possible product for both production and client.

In this project, Novatech will contribute to dimensioning, simulation, and design work, as well as to the construction of the wave power converter prototype.

Wave Energy Research Group, Aalborg University
The Wave Energy Research Group, at the Aalborg University Department of Civil Engineering, originated in the Hydraulics and Coastal Engineering group, which already had a decade of extensive experience of wave energy. The Wave Energy Research Group does research and development, and focuses on:
  • Hydraulic model testing of wave energy devices or their subsystems, using the Hydraulics and Coastal Engineering laboratory facilities.
  • Numerical simulations of wave climate and wave energy devices or their subsystems, using third party and Hydraulics and Coastal Engineering software packages.
  • Field testing of wave energy devices in real sea.
  • Participation in collaborations with other universities, institutions and companies within the field, including exchange of students and researchers.
  • Teaching within the field, for example, a Ph. D. course: Experimental Testing for Wave Energy Utilization and Coastal Engineering.
  • General consultancy within the field.
Staff from the Hydraulics and Coastal Engineering group have participated in more than 15 joint European research projects during recent years.
